Crystalline Mirror Solutions

Crystalline Mirror Solutions manufactures low-noise reflective optics using a proprietary coating technology

Founded in Vienna, Austria in 2013, Crystalline Mirror Solutions is a spin-off of the University of Vienna and the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology. CMS has since expanded to include a site in Santa Barbara, California. Single-crystal semiconductor supermirrors are a proprietary technology pioneered by CMS and protected by international patents. The application space of our novel coating technology spans optical components for ultraprecise optical clocks, precision interferometry, spectroscopy, as well as solutions for thermal management in high-power lasers and laser machining systems. In addition to the Prism Award, CMS has received a number of high-profile technology awards such as the Leibinger Innovation Award and the AMA Innovation Award, as well as various national and international start-up prizes. The mid-infrared supermirror technology developed by CMS and employed in these efforts is supported by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the Austria Wirtschaftsservice (aws).

Dr. Garrett Cole

CMS Co-Founder and CEO of Crystalline Mirror Solutions LLC (USA)

Garrett D. Cole obtained his PhD in Materials from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2005. Since completing his doctorate, he has held positions ranging from the first employee of a high-tech startup (Aerius Photonics LLC, now FLIR Electro-Optical Components), to a postdoctoral position at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, a Marie Curie Fellow of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and an assistant professor in the Faculty of Physics at the University of Vienna. Leveraging his expertise in micro- and nanofabrication, tunable vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers, and cavity optomechanics, Dr. Cole developed the proprietary substrate-transfer process at the heart of Crystalline Mirror Solutions and, along with Professor Markus Aspelmeyer, co-founded the venture in February 2012.
