Congratulations to our customers and collaborators for their recent paper: “Demonstration of displacement sensing of a mg-scale pendulum for mm- and mg- scale gravity measurements”

We would like to congratulate our customers and collaborators from Tohoku University, Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), the University of Tokyo, the National Astronomical University of Japan (NAOJ), and the Graduate University for Advanced Studies (SOKENDAI) for their recent pre-print article entitled, “Demonstration of displacement sensing of a mg-scale pendulum for mm- and mg- scale gravity measurements,” which was published on arXiv.org on September 13, 2018 (https://arxiv.org/abs/1809.05081).

In this work, the authors outline a novel experimental effort capable of realizing sufficient sensitivity to measure the gravitational coupling between their test-mass probe and a 100 mg mass at mm-scale separation. This work opens up the possibility for explorations of gravity at completely new length and mass scales, with the ultimate aim of probing gravitational coupling between small masses in the quantum regime. Our mirrors are also highlighted as a necessary ingredient to realize ground-state cooling of the suspended test mass and push this experiment to its ultimate limits.
